The emerging Safe Technologies Centre will influence the office real estate market. However, there will be no modern office block. For the purpose of CBT, the authorities want to use the existing spaces, where the Centre's administration will be located

There are several options

The Public Higher Vocational School, the plant Zakłady Azotowe or other thousands of square metres of space which are under control of the city's authorities are the potential headquarters of international Centrum Bezpiecznych Technologii (Centre of Safe Technologies), which is going to be put up in Tarnów. The scope of influence of CBT will be much wider than the administrative boarders of the city, which is the second biggest city in Małopolska voivodship.

Benefits not only for the city

- First of all, we'll notice development. There will be new research and training institutions. There will be the headquarters of the Centre, where all administration will be located. There will be new jobs, or new assignments for those who will provide service for us. Employment in new technologies will rise, that is to say employment in new chemical technologies will rise, as will the level of specialization. If we train here in Tarnów, than we will start to receive business trips, so restaurant and hotel owners will earn, as well as taxi drivers and institutions providing entertainment in free time - underlines Ryszard Ścigała, the president of Tarnów.

The Centre is already attracting interest

Among other tasks, CBT will be in charge of preventing misuse of chemical substances and increasing safety in chemical plants and transporation of hazardous substances. In the municipilaity of Tarnów it is emphasized that the idea of creating the Centre has many supporters.

- Notice that the importance of this institution is extremely high, because it is a project not only on a Polish or European scale, it is a project on a worldwide scale. A very clear interest in this enterprise has been expressed among others by the representatives of UN, the U.S. Department of State and representatives of developing countries, which were represented by the ambassador of Kenya on one of our recent conferences. This interest has been shown by coming to Tarnów.. This shows that we have exceeded a certain level, a limitation - explains the President of Tarnów, Ryszard Ścigała. - An interet is also expressed by INTERPOL and the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons - this shows that our idea adresses a certain existing demand, a niche. A number of difficult technologies is being transfered from Europe to Asian countries, the third world or African countries. The direct supervision of levels of safety does not laways follow in the wake of those technologies. This type of systems which include process of polimerization, oxidation, which could result in an explosion, pose a threat to the immediate vicinity and other places. Therefore, we should all be interested in this type of plands anf firms being more secure. In my opinion, countries such as the United States or the members of EU should be interested to help developing counties, also financially, to make certain systems more secure. Tarnów has nearly one hundred years experience in organic and inorganich chemistry, so it can be a good mediator and it can set an example. We will all benefit from it, there will be new jobs; training companies, translators, editing companies and universities will all benefit from it. This is a large piece of  actual development - he adds.

Tarnów is currently preparing for the second international conference on chemicals. Twelve months ago, in Sala Lustrzana in Tarnów, there was a meeting where the main theme was the chemical safety worldwide - Conference on Chemical Safety and Security. Among others, Bonnie D. Jenkins took part in the conference - an ambassador, a coordinator of threat reduction programmes in Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation in the United States Department of State. Since the conference took place, the centre programme board and organizational committee have been meeting continually.
